【アルバム説明】
「Helsinki Lambda Clubと行く、マジカル・サウンド・ミステリー・ツアー」。前回のフルアルバム「ME to ME」から約４年ぶりのリリースとなった今回のニューアルバム「Eleven plus two / Twelve plus one」は、そんなキャッチコピーでも付けたくなる様な、彼らの音楽的な懐の大きさや先鋭性、そして「バンドの未来」を感じさせる、これまでに無く実験精神と冒険精神溢れる意欲作だ。
過去にLana Del Rey、Public Access TV、Porridge Radioなどを手掛けたFelix Davis（Metropolis Mastering, London）をマスタリング・エンジニアに起用するというバンド初の試みが行われた今作、００年代初頭のガレージロック・リバイバルや９０年代前半のUSオルタナティヴ / インディーロックという彼らの原点を基礎としつつ、８０年代のニューウェイヴ / エレクトロポップ、ファンクやヒップホップ、パンク、サイケロック、バロックポップ、エレクトロ・ディスコ、ブリットポップ、ドリームポップ、更には００年代終盤～１０年代初頭のテムズビートやブルックリン・シーンまで、過去現在、様々な時代を彩ったエポックメイキングなサウンドを大胆に導入しており、バンド史上最も実験的で、カオスなまでに雑食でバラエティーに富んだ音作りに仕上がっている。
なんて言い方をすると、凄く雑多で取り散らかったアルバムという印象を与えてしまうかもしれないが、いやいや、そこは彼等のセンスの見せどころ！バンドのストロング・ポイントとも言える、一筋縄ではいかないが人懐っこいまでにポップでキャッチーなメロディーと、「？」を残しつつも自然に口ずさんでしまうくらいにフックと中毒性のあるリリックが、多様性に満ちた楽曲群に統一性をもたらし、バッチリ「Helsinki Lambda Clubなサウンド」にトランスフォームさせてしまっているのだ。
サラッと言ってしまったけど、これって実はそう簡単には出来ない事で、言うなればこれまでに海外に飛び出し、ワールドワイドな評価を得てきた日本人アーティスト達が持っていた、日本人ならではの絶妙なバランス感覚のサンプリング&エディット・センスとポップ・センスが成せる技なのだ。そう、Helsinki Lambda Clubにも確実にそれらが備わっている事がこのニューアルバムで証明されたと言えるだろう。
「今すぐに海外に飛び出すべき」。彼等の楽曲に触れ、そのライブ・パフォーマンスを観る度に思っていた。今までは何となく直感でそう思っていただけだが、この新作アルバムを聴いて「何となく」は「確信」に変わった。彼等のリミットレスな音楽性、ポップネスとクリエイティブさは、もう世界を相手にするべきレベルだ。
大袈裟でなく、このアルバムはHelsinki Lambda Clubのキャリアを大いに飛躍させるはずだ。日本国内は勿論、海の向こうにいるポップ・フリーク達にも是非届いて欲しいと心から思う。いや、絶対に届くはず！数年後、世界中のファンが言っているかもね、「このアルバムがきっかけだったね」と。

Their new album "Eleven plus two / Twelve plus one", their first release in four years since their last full-length album "ME to ME", is the kind of album that makes you want to pen outrageous catchphrases in order to capture the band's big-hearted and radical musicality. It’s an album that gives you an idea of what the "future of the bands" will look like. It's ambitious, brimming with their signature experimental and adventurous spirit, but this time more than ever before.
This is the first time that the band worked with mastering engineer Felix Davis (Metropolis Mastering, London, previously worked with Lana Del Rey, Public Access TV and Porridge Radio). Building on their musical origins that stem from early 00’s garage rock revival and 90’s alternative/indie rock, the album incorporates 80's new wave/electropop, funk, hip-hop, punk, psychedelic rock, baroque pop, electro-disco, and Britpop. Boldly introducing and interweaving a variety of epoch-making sounds from the past and present, “Eleven plus two / Twelve plus one” is by far Helsinki Lambda Club’s most experimental, chaotically genre-fluid and colorful album in their entire career.
The above description may make it sound like a messy and disorganized album, but no, this is where the band’s mastery comes in! Their most prominent strength is their ability to craft a non-straightforward yet catchy melody, while simultaneously leaving the listener with questions, craving for more. The sing-along friendly hooks and addictive lyricism bring out a cohesiveness to a diverse group of songs, transforming them into a loveable "Helsinki Lambda Club sound".
This is all much easier said than done. It requires an exquisite balance of sampling, editing and a taste for pop that only few Japanese artists have possessed, many whose music ventured abroad and gained worldwide acclaim. Helsinki Lambda Club carries this authentic skill with grace, and this new album proves it.
It's time for them to be heard outside of Japan and overseas as well. This thought has frequently crossed my mind every time I hear their music or watch their live performances, but after listening to their new album, my gut feeling has changed into a confident assertion. Their limitless musical creativity, poppiness and uniqueness is at a level that deserves to be seen by the world.
Without exaggeration, this album should be a huge step forward in Helsinki Lambda Club's career. I sincerely hope, and am sure that this album will reach music freaks in Japan and beyond. I can already envision years from now, fans all over the world saying, "This album was what started it all”.
